Vasarely Museum. Installed in the imposing Zichy Mansion (Zichy kastély), built in 1757, this renovated and rehung gallery contains some 150 works of Victor Vasarely (or Vásárhelyi Győző, as he was known before he emigrated to Paris in 1930), the late 'father of op art'. Op art is short for 'optical art', a style of abstract visual art.

Victor Vasarely bequeathed the collection of the Vasarely Museum to the state in the 1980s. One of the wings of the Baroque Zichy mansion, Óbuda was redesigned to accommodate the permanent display of works personally selected by the artist. The museum opened in 1987; it is one of the best endowed Vasarely collections in Central Europe.

In 1969 Vasarely, backed by his formidable political contacts, succeeded in obtaining permission from the Hungarian government to organise a solo show in Budapest. Held in the Műcsarnok (Art Hall), this was the largest exhibition of his career, and in just a few weeks it attracted 150,000 visitors.

Leben. Victor Vasarely studierte in Budapest an der Podolini-Volkmann Akademie. Später besuchte er die von Sándor Bortnyik in der Tradition des Bauhauses geführte Mühely Schule für Grafik.. 1930 zog er nach Paris, wo er zwischen 1930 und 1940 als Werbegrafiker arbeitete und hauptsächlich Poster entwarf. Er entwickelte dabei Interesse an Trompe-l'œil (frz. „täusche das Auge.
