But as I approach Deadvlei, the wind disappears and the noise that has come from the gusts turns quiet. Silence. The walk from the carpark takes about 15 minutes and then, over the crest of a hill, I get my first glimpse of Deadvlei: The large bleached white clay pan with the 700-year-old dead black trees sticking out, reaching past the orange dunes to the blue sky.

Deadvlei is one of Africa's most spectacular destinations. Except most people haven't heard of Deadvlei. Sossusvlei is the famous destination in Namibia's desert yet it is not nearly as impressive. Many people visit Namibia on the basis of a few incredible desert images. Those incredible desert images are usually of Deadvlei, not Sossusvlei.

Deadvlei is located on the western corridor of Namibia inside Namib-Naukluft National Park with drive time from Swakopmund or Windhoek sitting at around 5 hours. Because of the distance from either major town, I would highly recommend a 2 night stay in or around Sesriem to make the most of your visit to Deadvlei.

One of the best things to do in Deadvlei is to hike around the dunes for amazing views and to take photos with different perspectives. I recommend renting an off-road vehicle for your trip (or booking a tour that has one of these vehicles sorted for you) because the last couple of miles are difficult without one.

Approaching Deadvlei. I must have been 13 years old when I first saw photos of Deadvlei in National Geographic magazine - a place so remote and wildly alien that it was hard to believe that it could exist outside the photos on the page. I never forgot those photos and now, somehow, here I am.

T RYING TO DESCRIBE what Dead Vlei looks like in words is no easy task. As the title of the post suggests, this is a surreal place, a bizarrely beautiful landscape that makes you feel like you're strolling on Mars rather than planet Earth.

Dune 45, Sossusvlei. The dune is 80 meters high and is said to be composed of 5-million-year-old sands. You can climb to the top of Dune 45 in about 40 minutes but the unsteady surface makes it more work out then you might expect in Sossusvlei National Park.. We don't recommend you attempt to climb it in the hot midday sun but it is a pleasant hike at sunrise when it is still cool.
